Select appropriate suction catheter. Use a rigid catheter when suctioning the mouth or oropharynx. If the nasal passages need to be suctioned, select a soft catheter and use low to medium suction (80 to 120 mmHg). A bulb syringe may be used if a soft catheter is not available. Ensure catheter is connected to suction tubing and suction tubing is connected to an appropriate suction device. Test for adequate suction by occluding the catheter's side port. Position yourself at the patient's head. If this is not possible, take a position in which you can observe the airway. Turn on the suction unit. Open airway. Under direct vision gently insert the catheter without occluding the side port. (Yankauer - Place the rigid tip so that the convex (bulging) side is against the roof of the mouth. Insert it no farther down than the base of the tongue). Occlude the catheter's side port to commence suctioning whilst gradually withdrawing the catheter – suctioning should be limited to ≤ 10 second episodes. If necessary, rinse the catheter with water to prevent obstruction of the tubing from dried or thick material. Do this by keeping a bottle of water available and applying suction to the water as necessary to clear the tubing.
